Rivian spent four years selling a three-row SUV with a bench. Today it put captain’s chairs in the 2027 R1S, called them the most-requested interior feature, and priced the SUV from $83,990. The R1T starts at $79,990. Destination is extra. Rivian’s August 13 story is the source. Dual and Tri are gone. Premium, Performance, and Quad are the names now. You can configure one today.
The seats everyone asked for
The six-seat layout is built around a center pass-through. Anyone can walk to the third row without folding a seat or disturbing a car seat already locked in. Each captain’s chair gets an armrest that stows flush and a push-to-release cup holder that folds down from the inside edge. Both seats are heated, fold flat, and keep the full car-seat tie-downs. Skis and boards go down the middle with six people still in the truck. Rivian says cargo capacity does not take a hit.
Want seven seats? The bench stays. Official copy: available on both interiors on R1S Premium, and on Black Mountain Signature on Performance and Quad. Rivian’s compare page lists captain’s chairs as optional on all three trims. The story does not print an option price. The chairs are the news. The invoice is not.
Dual and Tri are dead
Rivian is done asking how many motors you want. The 2027 R1 lineup copies the R2 trim names. The hardware did not change. The badges did. Quad kept its name because Quad still sells.
Official Rivian figures, August 13:
- Premium: dual-motor, 533 hp, 610 lb-ft, 0–60 in 4.5 seconds. Optional power upgrade: 665 hp, 829 lb-ft, 3.4 seconds. Long Range: up to 410 miles on the R1S, 420 on the R1T.
- Performance: three motors, 850 hp, 1,103 lb-ft, 2.9 seconds, up to 371 miles on both.
- Quad: still Quad. 1,025 hp, 1,198 lb-ft. R1T 0–60 in 2.5 seconds and a quarter mile in 10.5 with Launch Mode. Up to 374 miles on both.
Rivian.com/compare lists the R1S Premium from $83,990, Performance from $106,990, Quad from $121,990. Those are vehicle prices. The story footnote says additional taxes and fees apply. A current Rivian lease offer on rivian.com includes a $1,895 destination charge. Outlets that print $85,885 and $81,885 added dest. Rivian did not.
Interiors get the R2 language too. Performance and Quad: Slate Sky Signature, Black Mountain Signature, Ocean Coast Signature. Premium: Black Mountain and Ocean Coast, no Signature suffix. Wood names change with the theme. NACS is included on the compare page. That part was already settled.
A tire for the truck, a color from the R2
The R1T gets a new 20-inch Adventure All-Season wheel and Goodyear tire. Standard on Premium. No-cost option on Performance. Rivian says more traction without the usual range hit from a more capable tire. Official EPA estimates with that wheel: 300 miles on Premium, 380 on Premium Long Range, 348 on Performance. The rest of the range chart in the story is still the 22-inch road-wheel set.
Esker Silver, the liquid-metal paint Rivian first put on the R2, replaces LA Silver as the included color on both R1S and R1T. Fine metallic flake. Glacier gravel. It is available across the lineup and with every interior. The trucks now share a color name with the smaller SUV. That is the unification program.
The 2027 R1 is not a new truck. It is a rename, a paint chip, a tire, and the seats people have been yelling about since the first R1S showed up with a bench. Rivian will take $83,990 for the cheap SUV and $79,990 for the cheap truck, before destination, and it will let you configure it today. The most expensive change is the one people actually wanted. It just took until 2027 to put two chairs where a bench used to be.
