Tesla Roadster’s Oct 1 Tease Puts Cold-Gas Thrusters on Acceleration and Cornering

Tesla just flipped tesla.com/roadster into a black-screen countdown. On the page right now you get the word Roadster, a ticking clock, and a Watch Livestream button that points at x.com/Tesla. Meta copy still calls it an all-electric sports car and “the quickest vehicle in the world,” with record-setting acceleration, range, and performance. What you do not get on the current official page: prices, Specs sheets, SpaceX badges, thruster diagrams, or Founders Series language.

The countdown is aimed at 2026-10-02T00:30:00Z — that is October 1, 2026, 8:30 p.m. EDT. A few days earlier, on September 12, Tesla’s X account posted “Go for launch” with 10.01 and the same rear-silhouette / four-plume graphic now living on the Roadster URL. That plume image is why the internet is talking thrusters again — but those details are Musk statements and video analysis, not current Tesla brochure copy.

Official page vs. the thruster story

Keep the labels straight. Tesla’s live Roadster page is a countdown + livestream CTA. The thruster package — cold gas, COPV tanks, Bond license plate, ~1.1s talk, cornering via directed thrust — comes from Elon Musk over the years and from YouTuber analysis of the teaser art. Do not read a SpaceX option sheet into today’s HTML.

Longstanding Roadster numbers (historical pitch — not on the current tease page)

Before this countdown wipe, Tesla’s Roadster materials long quoted a base pitch in this neighborhood. Treat these as the familiar historical claims, not as text printed on the Oct 1 tease page:

  • 0–60 mph under 2 seconds (often quoted as 1.9s)
  • Top speed over 250 mph
  • About 620 miles of range
  • Roughly a 200 kWh pack
  • Base around $200,000; Founders Series around $250,000
  • $50,000 reservations opened in 2017

What Elon Musk has said (attribute to Musk, not the current Tesla page)

From Twitter/X, Jay Leno-era comments, and long-running interviews — Musk, not today’s brochure:

  • A SpaceX option with roughly 10 small rocket / cold-gas thrusters arranged around the car
  • Dramatic gains in acceleration, top speed, braking, and cornering
  • “Maybe they will even allow a Tesla to fly.”
  • Ultra-high-pressure air in a SpaceX-style COPV composite overwrapped pressure vessel in place of the rear seats, replenished by pumps from the pack when power allows
  • A main thruster behind a motorized license plate — Musk’s “full-on James Bond” line — as a cold-gas thruster
  • Thruster-equipped goals often cited around ~1.1s 0–60 / very high g — Musk/reported targets, not a confirmed production MSRP sheet

Cold gas does not mean a gasoline tank. In rocket speak, “gas” is the compressed air (or similar inert propellant) stored in that COPV bottle — not pump gas. The Roadster would still be electric; the thrusters are a pressure vessel topped up by pack-powered pumps, not a fuel filler for unleaded.

Musk has talked cold-gas thrusters in the wild for years — including this short clip from a Joe Rogan conversation (fan clip channel):

Solving The Money Problem reads the teaser

Alex flagged Solving The Money Problem’s September 13, 2026 breakdown — New Tesla Roadster Will Break The Internet. Lead embed. This is YouTuber analysis of Tesla’s teaser, not Tesla copy:

  • Reads the Tesla graphic as the rear of the Roadster over four upward-angled cold-gas thrusters — angled for downforce so the car can dig in on insane launches.
  • Argues four rear thrusters alone will not safely hover or land; expects ~8–10 thrusters (rear plus underbody / corner units).
  • Expects a brief fly / hover demo at the event — STMP’s call, not a Tesla promise on the countdown page.
  • Also frames thrusters as a braking / handling tool, not only a straight-line shove.

Tire grip is no longer the whole story

This is the part that matters past a drag-strip meme. STMP’s cornering argument, paraphrased:

  • Downforce: thrusters that press the car into the road add traction, so a corner can be taken harder than rubber alone allows.
  • Lateral / gimbal: if underbody thrusters gimbal, they can blast sideways and push the car into and around the turn — force beyond the tire contact patch.
  • STMP’s line: the Roadster could “take corners much faster than any vehicle,” accelerate harder than history, and still tease fly/hover.

If that package appears on stage, sports-car talk gains a third axis: directed thrust. Street-legal vs. track-only is still open — FMVSS was not written for SpaceX cold gas under the floorpan.

Would you option a SpaceX thruster package if Tesla actually sells one — or is a tire-only Roadster already enough chaos? Street legality remains an open fight. The countdown does not care.
