Rivian Teams Up with Tesla: Access to Supercharger Network Coming to R1S and R1T Models

Rivian, the renowned American electric vehicle (EV) adventure startup, has recently made a groundbreaking announcement that is sure to excite both current and future owners of their R1T pickup truck and R1S SUV models. Rivian has revealed plans to implement Tesla’s charging port on their vehicles, granting Rivian owners access to Tesla’s extensive network of over 12,000 Superchargers across the United States and Canada starting in 2024.

This strategic partnership between Rivian and Tesla will allow Rivian owners to seamlessly utilize Tesla’s Supercharger network for convenient and efficient charging. The move comes as part of Rivian’s commitment to providing their customers with enhanced charging options, ensuring a hassle-free experience during their EV journeys.

Initially, an adaptor will be required to connect Rivian vehicles to Tesla’s Superchargers. However, Rivian has also confirmed that starting in 2025, the R1T and R1S models will come equipped with the North American Charging Standard (NACS) connector as a standard feature. This means that Rivian owners will no longer need an adaptor, further simplifying the charging process and enhancing compatibility between different charging networks.

RJ Scaringe, the Founder, and CEO of Rivian, expressed his enthusiasm for the partnership, stating, “We’re excited to work with Tesla and to see collaborations like this help advance the world toward carbon neutrality. The adoption of the North American Charging Standard will enable our existing and future customers to leverage Tesla’s expansive Supercharger network while we continue to build out our Rivian Adventure Network. We look forward to continuing to find new ways to accelerate EV adoption.”

In addition to partnering with Tesla to provide Rivian owners access to the Supercharger network, Rivian remains committed to expanding its proprietary charging infrastructure, known as the Rivian Adventure Network. Unlike Tesla’s Supercharger network, Rivian’s focus is on extending charging coverage to rural and remote areas, ensuring that EV owners can embark on adventures beyond urban centers. By strategically locating their fast chargers in these less-developed regions, Rivian aims to eliminate range anxiety and facilitate long-distance travel for their customers, ultimately promoting the widespread adoption of electric vehicles in previously underserved areas. Rivian’s dedication to building a comprehensive charging network that caters to diverse geographical locations demonstrates their commitment to creating a sustainable future with EVs as the driving force.

With this exciting development, Rivian is taking a significant step forward in addressing the common concern of charging infrastructure availability for EV owners. By integrating Tesla’s Supercharger network into their vehicles, Rivian is providing their customers with a seamless and extensive charging solution that will enhance the overall ownership experience. As Rivian continues to revolutionize the EV market with their innovative designs and commitment to sustainability, this partnership with Tesla marks yet another milestone in their journey towards transforming the automotive industry.
