In an announcement that has electrified the automotive industry, Tesla confirmed that the first Cybertruck has finally been produced at its Gigafactory in Texas. This momentous event occurs two years behind the original schedule, adding a new chapter to the story of this much-anticipated electric pickup.
Emerging from a series of delays and considerable anticipation, the first Cybertruck’s production is a significant milestone for Tesla. It marks the start of the company’s audacious venture into the electric pickup market, set to compete with Rivian’s R1T, Ford’s F-150 Lightning, and the GMC Hummer EV.
A production-intent model, the first Cybertruck off the assembly line, provides a glimpse into Tesla’s innovative manufacturing approach. Unveiled as a large, stainless steel trapezoid on wheels in 2019, the Cybertruck’s unconventional design involves complex production techniques, a significant departure from traditional automobile manufacturing.
Elon Musk had previously hinted at the challenges of constructing this “radical product,” particularly its stainless steel body, which demands intricate shaping and welding techniques. Furthermore, Tesla has encountered ongoing obstacles with its next-generation 4680 battery, a crucial component of its electric vehicle lineup.
Tesla’s ambitious journey with the Cybertruck commenced in 2019, with a targeted production date in late 2021. A hiccup in the form of an infamous window-shattering demonstration, however, coupled with supply chain constraints and manufacturing complexities, led to multiple rescheduling. Initially, the production was pushed to 2022, but it wasn’t until July 2023 that the first Tesla Cybertruck finally emerged from the production line.
The company’s Twitter announcement showcased the vehicle, with a photograph capturing the landmark moment. Surrounded by hard-hatted workers, the Cybertruck, although mostly obscured, exuded an air of enigma and achievement.

While the manufacturing of the first Cybertruck signals a step forward, Tesla faces another hurdle: meeting the overwhelming demand. Approximately 200,000 people are reportedly waiting for their Cybertruck delivery, a tall order considering the challenges Elon Musk mentioned regarding the vehicle’s unique manufacturing process.
As we move closer to the end of the third quarter of 2023, the timing of the delivery event remains somewhat uncertain. With the first Cybertruck now built, it’s plausible that Tesla is slightly ahead of its projected timeline. However, the company might opt to leverage this advantage to fine-tune its production and supply chain logistics, paving the way for smoother mass production.
In terms of specs and pricing, the last update from Tesla was in 2019 during the prototype launch. The company has remained tight-lipped about further details, stating only that Cybertruck’s final cost could be impacted by various factors, including supply chain shortages and the broader economic climate.
