Caterham’s 2026 UK price list puts the Seven 420S at £41,990 as a complete kit. If you want the 420R pack instead, it’s £42,990. Factory build adds £2,595, so a factory-built 420S comes to £44,585, which is the on-the-road figure Caterham uses in its finance example. You get 210 bhp from a dry-sumped 2.0-litre Ford Duratec in a car that weighs about 560 kg. The only gearbox listed is a five-speed manual.

The clutch: a five-speed manual, and nothing else
Caterham’s Seven 420 page lists the transmission as a “5-speed manual gearbox” in the spec table, in the Standard equipment pack, and again in the optional pack. You won’t find an automatic, a paddle-shift, or a dual-clutch on the 420 at all. The only factory sequential on the price list is a six-speed, and Caterham marks it for the supercharged 620R alone. On the 420, the upgrades sharpen the manual car rather than replace it. The optional equipment pack adds a lightweight flywheel and a limited-slip differential, the S Range list prices the diff at £1,500, and £600 sequential shift lights tell you when to grab the next gear. The gearbox sits behind a naturally aspirated Duratec that makes 210 bhp at 7,600 rpm and 203 Nm at 6,300 rpm, so you’ll be using the lever a lot.

Where the 420 fits
The 420 sits between the 180 bhp 360 and the 310 bhp supercharged 620. A 420S kit costs £3,500 more than a 360S, and for that you get another 30 bhp, dry sump lubrication as standard, and a 0–60 time of 3.8 seconds instead of 4.8. It’s also the cheapest Seven that matches the 420 Nürburgring Edition’s 3.8-second time without that car’s £48,995 limited-run price. The 620S is £58,490 and comes factory built only, and the 620R, at £66,490, is the one that swaps to the six-speed sequential. If you want a Caterham with a clutch pedal and the most power on offer, the 420 is the top of the range.
