BMW USA says performance purists get a standard 6-speed manual in the M4 Coupe, while the M4 Competition and M4 Competition xDrive run the 8-speed M Sport transmission with Drivelogic. The official technical highlights sheet lists the base car’s transmission as 6-speed, manual, with rear-wheel drive only. Three pedals are the only path into the base coupe. Competition buys you more horsepower and leaves the stick home.
